I Think I'm No Good at Art - Per. 7, Spring 2020

The Freedman by JQA Ward
The Freedman by John Quincy Adams Ward

I'm posting with a heavy heart this morning. I'm sure that you, like me, are trying to figure out how to be a positive force in this sad time. Let's look to art to both better understand and express our perspectives on healing from all the injustices.

Your assignment will be:
1. Examine this sculpture made in 1863.
Watch this video for an excellent analysis of the sculpture and its meaning.

2. Submit your answers to the questions on the google form posted on your google classroom page.
All work will be due June 12.

The best way to practice drawing faces is to really study a few. Look at and try to match the symmetry you observe. I've attached a drawing of Gus Fring (anyone?). The artist pasted his photo of half of Gus's face, then drew the other half. You have to study the half you cut away, but also match the half that is there, symmetrically. Faces are BI-LATERAL SYMMETRY. The same on either side of the center axis.

1. Find a person facing front (even my Gus example is tilted a bit to the side. Front facing is easiest to start.)
2. Make sure it is large enough - at least 8 inches from the top of the head to the chin.
3. Cut it right down the center axis, right along the middle of the nose.
4. Glue it onto a piece of plain white paper. (no lined paper)
5. Draw in the other side, matching for size, details, and for value (lights and darks).
6. Photograph your work and upload it to me, using google classroom, preferably.

Your next drawing assignment requires your honesty. You may not look up a reference photo. You must draw this completely from memory and imagination. Draw Batman. NO CHEATING! This assignment will be due 5/22.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's art this week. One artist who inspires me to practice drawing all the time is Danny Gregory. Click here to see Danny Gregory Art

Approach your next drawing in his style. Continue to use the list of prompts.

Answer this question with your next submission: Why does Danny Gregory's breakfast get cold?  This assignment, both parts, is due 5/15.

Hi Everyone,

I've been seeing a steady stream of work shared, and each one that I get is so exciting. Weird - being away from school makes new student artwork a treasure.

Your next assignment will review the concepts we started with the Elements and Principles of Art.

Here is a slideshow to further explain the Elements and Principles.

We are going to create a photo self-portrait with a composition that demonstrates one of the Principles of Design. (Hint: you will often notice other principles present, even as you focus on one particular principle. ie, Rhythm and Repetition can look like Contrast).

Gather some objects and/or people that are helping you survive the quarantine. You will need an assistant or a stand and timer to get the photo shot.

These ideas are inspired by the work of artist Gregg Segal. You can see his series focused on Venezuelan refugees on his site. An art teacher in Maryland asked her students to make their own Segal style works, and now, we are going to try it! Here are some examples of her students' work:

I colored over their faces for their privacy, but they looked like brothers! Feel free to hide your face if you prefer. Most of the works I saw had the students shielding their faces, or with hoodies pulled over them.

Notice how thoughtful these students were in collecting and arranging their compositions. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. This assignment will be due April 30.

- Gather some objects that are helping you survive Quarantine.
- Think about one (or more?) of the Principles of Design, and have that guide you in the way you arrange yourself and your objects. Remember that your background will be a part of your design composition choice.
- Enlist a timer, tripod, stand, and/or helper to take your clear, well-lit photo. You need not show your face!!

- Submit in your google doc and remember to hit "Share".

April 17, 2020  Remember, this course only works if you keep practicing your drawing skills every day.

Here is the order in which you should approach your assignments if you require order 😀:

Due date: April 20 - Eyes Assignment, (if not finished at school)
April 24 - Wk.1 Prompt from Choices in 30 Day Drawing Challenge
April 24 - Found Object Color Wheel
April 29 - Artwork in Reaction to "This Time" (highlighted below in teal)
May 1    - Peter Max style Radial Design

April 8, 2020

At the beginning of our semester, we made radial designs by drawing repeated patterns on CDs. I'm going to challenge you to continue thinking of radial design, as both a continuation of that first project and the most recent one, the Found Object Color Wheel.

This time, I'd like you to take a look at the art of Peter Max as inspiration for this assignment. He's really groooovy.
Peter Max, "Adam Cosmo"

This video, by Tennessee art teacher Chad Brown, shows the steps to create this style of radial design. Please make your designs, outline in black, and color them in any way you'd like. Then send me a pic!

Take good care.

April 1, 2020

I'd like for everyone to send me their images. Could you, please?
This week, it would be great to think about color all around us. Let's make our own versions of Found Object Color Wheels. Here are a couple of examples:

Just find objects either indoors or outdoors or both. Then arrange them according to the wheel.

Take a photo - careful not to get your shadow in the picture - and submit it to me.

Hope everyone is hanging in there with the quarantine, and all are doing their part to keep us healthy. I miss seeing everyone, and look forward to getting back into school to close out this weird year.

I wanted to update you on the Eyes assignment. I know some of you brought yours home, but other folks maybe didn't. It's the kind of work you could do at home. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

March 16, 2020 Hi Everyone!

I hope you are managing to stay calm and healthy during this weird time. I'm sorry it has taken me a few days to get to this page. Making art can be a calming activity when all else is kooky and unknown.

****FIRST ART ASSIGNMENT FOR DISTANCE LEARNING, "REACTION TO THIS TIME":

I am quoting Ms. Wood's recent message here, as it is a perfect prompt for your sketchbooks:

This is an unprecedented time in American History.  You will tell your kids about this time in your life, historians will write books about it, there will be movies made about it. Take a few minutes each day and write down your thoughts. Take some pictures. Record your thoughts - either on video or audio.  You will be glad you did - trust me.

I would encourage you to write AND DRAW about it! And, if you feel like sharing, I would love to see your work. Email it to me at mmcnally@shschools.com

Here are some other sketchbook prompts.(below) I'm going to post my sketches here as well, so that you can see my practice.

Thinking of you, and hoping you are all well.
